HISTORY
AND CHRONIC OF AVANTGARDE ACOUSTIC In the beginning there was only personal
enthusiasm: The dashing original sound playback of a Pink Floyd concert via a
hornspeaker system fascinated Holger Fromme to such an extent that in 1983 the
later company founder of Avantgarde Acoustic bought a horn system for his own
use in his small 16 sqm student flat. However, this system did not satisfy the
music lover for long. He was searching for a maximum of playback sound quality;
but the market did not offer the appropriate system. Thus Holger Fromme started
to develop spherical hornspeaker systems himself. He got so fascinated by the
technology that he started his research of the physics. Mr. Fromme got hold of
some special literature at the University of Dresden. It took over 5 months till
the books about horn physics finally arrived from former Eastern Germany. Holger
Fromme started to write his own computer program for horn calculations. In 1985
he made his own horn molds constructed of simple plaster. The first set of
handmade fibreglass TRIO horns were produced. Already at these early days he was
strongly supported by the engineer Matthias Ruff who had already gained
experience in constructing hornspeakers. Soon, producing hornspeaker systems for
himself no longer satisfied Holger Fromme. As with all innovative products,
which are based upon the passion of their founders, Holger Fromme and Matthias
Ruff wanted to make this exciting experience of an optimal loudspeaker system
known to and appreciated by other people. Thus on May 17, 1991 the company
called "Avantgarde Acoustic Lautsprechersysteme GmbH" was founded.For
successful business you need public response. An important motivation for Holger
Fromme and Matthias Ruff in this respect was the Consumer Electronic Show, which
took place in Berlin in 1993. During this show Avantgarde Acoustic presented its
products to a broad public for the first time. The public response to the
extraordinary horns was amazing.In fact this stirred the sound specialists to
open up new production methods and stimulated them to use new materials. In
1994, as the very first manufacturer in the world, Avantgarde Acoustic produced
its first spherical horns by using the elaborate injection moulding technology.
This ensured a precision in horn manufacturing which had been impossible to date
and which gave Avantgarde Acoustic a leading edge in the high-end audio
industry.Avantgarde Acoustic inaugurated their first production facility in
Walsdorf - "Factory I" a 120 sqm Garage! The complete product
portfolio - UNO, DUO and TRIO was officially launched the same year on the High
End Frankfurt 1994. Many further presentations at international trade fairs
followed which made Avantgarde Acoustic known to High End enthusiast throughout
the world.Driven by their success, in 1996 Avantgarde Acoustic moved into a new
production facility in Bad Camberg. With more than 400 sqm "Factory II"
was an important backbone to further growth. But this did not last for too long.
Raving reviews, awards and satisfied customers all over the world made the
company expand faster than ever expected. So in 1998, Avantgarde Acoustic moved
again and found his new home in the Odenwald. The high quality products are
manufactured now in Lautertal. "Factory III" has 1500 sqm (16.140
square feet) production facility with dedicated test and measurement room,
storage and shipping hall and a spacious assembly line, which offers the space
for highest quality manufacturing.In 1999 another milestone was introduced - the
DUO version 2.0. The first spherical horn system using CDC-technology WITHOUT
any passive filter components in its midrange signal path and dynamic active
subwoofer control. The DUO 2.0 combines all of Avantgarde Acoustics
technological and creative potential, resulting in a most sophisticated two-way
horn system which already today is a "classic" among the two way horn
systems. Spherical horn + CDC + no passive components + dynamic real time bass
control = world class!In 2000 the TRIO OMEGA-version was launched. After being 6
years successfully in the market without any modification, the OMEGA version
gave new meaning to the name "Avantgarde". The first spherical horn
speaker with 109 dB efficiency and unique Avantgarde Acoustic OMEGA HIGH
IMPEDANCE TECHNOLOGY. With up to 27 ohm impedance and only four passive
components in the signal path, the TRIO OMEGA is probably the most powerful,
most dynamic, most revealing and most "simple to drive" speaker system
in the world. The TRIO embodies Avantgarde Acoustics conviction, the conviction
to go one step beyond and to leave common routes. And this in all aspects.Driven
by customer demands for a small speaker but with "big Avantgarde"
sound, the SOLO was introduced in early 2002. Preceding this launch, the
Avantgarde Acoustic designers had to come up with a variety of new ideas in both
speaker and cabinet technology. Picking the cabinet part, it was finally a
combination of a Bayer high tech plastic and swiss engineering and tooling that
allowed for a lightweight, compact, rigid and contemporarily shaped body.
Proudly taking its place in a legendary family, this co-axial spherical horn
speaker with dynamic phase control (pat. pend.) offers unmatched staging and
dynamic capabilities. 119 dB max SPL down to 32 Hz in a beautiful small
enclosure with only 35 l volume are remarkable figures for such a compact
design. The first and only speaker system of its kind!In 2003 the engineers from
the German Odenwald presented something really spectacular: the BASSHORN, a true
State-of-the-Art subwoofer was introduced! So far, a bass horn had mostly been
considered to be too unflexible, but the Avantgarde Acoustic BASSHORN overcomes
many disadvantages of typical bass horn installations. Designed as a segmented
horn, it allows for easy installation and offers multiple placement
possibilities. Due to the built-in active crossover, the BASSHORN can be
adjusted for different placement options and can be tuned for optimal tonal
balance. As a unique technical highlight, each BASSHORN features the patented
ADRIC circuitry, which compensates for the relatively small horn mouth area so
that each BASSHORN achieves bass response down to an amazing 18 Hz. At the given
horn dimensions this is an unparalled performance!But in 2003 also was the year
of taking Avantgarde virtues to another field: the Avantgarde Acoustic “Model 5”
integrated amplifier was introduced! This way the horn experts made a clear
statement on amplification and presented a sophisticated low powered amplifier
with radically reduced circuitry for amazing dynamics and resolution. With its
2x1 watts class A (2x27 watts max. in A/B mode) Model 5 clearly shows how little
it takes to bring the fascination of hornspeakers to life. Model 5 heralded a
new breed of amplifiers, which was presented in late 2004, featuring new and
unique technologies that will create a “vortex” among high end amplifiers: the
ONE series amplifiers, consisting of the ONE PRE pre amplifier and the ONE POWER
mono blocks. The elaborate pre amplifier features a battery power supply and
DC-SYNC (pat. pend.) coupled signal paths. Proprietary hand built switches
ensure maximum contact safety, allowing the DC voltage of the DC-SYNC circuit to
flow constantly, thus ultimately reducing signal distortions that most other
circuit designs suffer from. The mono blocks also use proprietary technologies
such as balanced single-ended-push-pull power amplifiers (pat. pend.) in a
unique current compensated choke (used as a DC source for the working load)
layout. But besides the up-to-date technology, Avantgarde Acoustic is still
aware of the value and the fanatstic haptics of a “good old” high precision
mechanical construction. And it was this symbiosis that already made these
amplifiers a new kind of “flagship” for Avantgarde Acoustic, in both visual and
sonic appearance.2005 started as a very exciting year for Avantgarde Acoustic as
2 new hornspeakers were scheduled for being launched: the DUO PRIMO and the UNO
PICCO. These new models stand for Avantgarde Acoustic’s flexibility to find
creative answers to consumer needs, because not everybody who is “blown away” by
the performance of a TRIO + BASSHORN speaker system can accommodate such a big
multipart system at home. Hence the idea of a “metamorphosis” was born, the
amalgamation of spherical horns and hornbass (DUO PRIMO) or conventional
subwoofer (UNO PICCO) in one elegant cabinet, thus saving space and satifying
those who prefer the elegance and warmth of a wooden surface. For the unique and
“Avantgarde“ appearance of these speakers, Avantgarde Acoustic was able to win
over Hannes Wettstein and Tobias Adami from zed. of Switzerland, one of Europes
leading industrial design offices.Derived from the successful market entry of
the DUO PRIMO, the Avantgarde Acoustic designers immediately pursued the idea of
making the phantastic mid-high horn section of the DUO PRIMO available in a much
more compact and more moderately priced speaker. The logic idea: why not
updating the original DUO concept? Finally the engineers found a way to adapt
the DUO PRIMO drivers and crossovers accordingly, giving birth to the DUO OMEGA.
And last but not least, owners of previous DUO models could also share this
major step forward by simply applying an upgrade kit to their existing speaker.
After only 6 months of market presence the DUO OMEGA, and the upgrade kit
respectively, became the bestesellers in the Avantgarde Acoustic product
portfolio.A project started in 2006 created pleasant anticipation among horn
lovers around the globe: the UNO NANO. With the UNO NANO, Avantgarde Acoustic
took the challenge of bringing the old UNO concept to a higher level of customer
acceptance, by drastically reducing the required space for setting up a
“classic” Avantgarde Acoustic horn speaker. To keep and even surpass the high
standard of the UNO in a smaller package, the engineering of the UNO NANO
required deliberate changes in all fields. Consequently new horns, new drivers
and a new configuartion of horns and subwoofers were developped. In parallel,
the DUO series got new members in 2006, too: the DUO GROSSO and the DUO MEZZO.
Basing on the DUO OMEGA mid-high horn section, these 2 new models answered to
client demands for medium sized horns with powerful bass performance, suitable
for large rooms as well. While the DUO MEZZO uses the SHORT BASSHORN subwoofer
technology of the DUO PRIMO, the DUO GROSSO’s subwoofer was a new design, but
also featured the amplifier technology and drivers of the horn loaded subwoofers.
Continuing the upgrade priciple started with the DUO OMEGA, the Avantgarde
Acoustic engineers made sure that both subwoofers could also be upgraded to
existing DUO line speakers. With that it is finally possible to enter the DUO
line with a standard DUO and upgrading it over the years until DUO PRIMO status.
A unique concept of customer care.In 2007 the horn specialists from Germany made
another move in the electronic field by developping a “next generation” of
affordable amplifiers with sophisticated techology and superb sound. The
resulting MODEL THREE amplifier was finally launched at the Munich High End Show
in 2007, fully replacing the MODEL 5 amplifiers by the end of 2007. The UNO NANO
was also finally introduced on the Munich High End Show of 2007, and quickly
became the new standard in the Avantgarde Acoustic entry level, fully replacing
the old UNO models by the end of 2007.Avantgarde Acoustic stands for a vision.
It is the vision to bring the horn technology to its limits and create in over
10 years of development a timeless and elegant product portfolio. The symbiosis
of classic and modern, of form and function, fascination and Zeitgeist. And a
homage to the first pioneers of the hornspeaker technology, Paul Klipsch and
Paul Voigt.
