The Epsilon was the last of the truly top-of-the-line speakers produced by Infinity. Designed by John Miller and Cary Christie after Arnie Nudell had left Infinity, it was designed to be the heir to the IRS Betas, but in a more compact package that was easier to place in a room. The Epsilon was a departure for Infinity, in that, after many years of dipole speakers, it was sealed in the back and was (primarily) monopole. The Epsilon may be the most neutral speaker I’ve ever heard - no coloration of the music at all, just very clean, detailed sound. Its only shortcoming may be a lack of deep bass response, the result of trying to fit everything into a single cabinet.

It could be argued quite easily that REL founder Richard E. Lord put the subwoofer or sub-bass loudspeaker system on the hi-fi map. Before he appeared on the scene the subwoofer was not the kind of thing any self respecting audiophile would consider giving house room to. This may have been because most of the species were sold with satellite loudspeakers or simply because no one had made a serious subwoofer before, one that could enhance rather than muddy the quality of regular speakers.The key feature that makes REL subs so easy to get a good result with is the ability to adjust the roll-off point of the sub so that it marries seamlessly with the stereo speakers. REL subs are not designed to increase the amount of bass produced by a system but to extend the bandwidth of the existing speakers. For a stereo speaker to be able to extend down to the 12Hz (-6dB) claimed for the Stadium III it would have to be as big as a fridge, a big fridge at that. The reason the REL is able to do that with a 65 litre cabinet is that it is actively driven, it has its own 200 watt MOSFET power amp and electronic crossover which means that it can boost the output at very low frequencies. In other words it drives the big ten inch Volt drive unit harder therefore producing more bass energy.Another reason for REL's success is inclusion of both high and low level signal inputs, this means that you can feed the sub exactly the same signal that you send to your speakers via the high level input. The connection is made with a three core cable that hooks up to your amplifier's speaker outputs. There is of course the low or line level input but this is really only appropriate for surround sound processors which have a dedicated LFE (low frequency effects) output. Sound quality To integrate the Stadium III with your speaker traditionally requires that you roll the sub in at the point your speaker rolls off and then set output level to match the speaker. However, I have found that if you set roll off three or four dB higher than the speaker's roll-off and turn the output level down a bit you can get a better result. There are many surprising aspects to the sound of this sub not least being the way that it enhances the high frequency performance of all the speakers I have tried it with. It introduces a sense of open spaciousness that is hard to accredit to an improvement in low frequency extension and power. It must be something to do with the way that bass defines a space but is not an easy phenomenon to explain. Yet it is not in the least bit subtle and gives the REL considerably more appeal than you would expect an extra octave or two in the bass to produce.The bass does of course help matters considerably, it adds a foundation to the sound that gives the rest of the range something to work from, something solid. This seems to apply regardless of the bass content of the music. There is a tendency to think that only your Prodigy and Grace Jones albums will sound a lot better with a decent sub but the Stadium III boosts everything you play. The more familiar and well loved the album the more exciting the result, even albums like Jeff Beck's Wired, which is clearly fantastic yet can sound compressed, takes on a whole new sense of purpose and solidity with this sub.All this is achieved without you thinking wow there's loads of bass, in other words you are not skewing the balance of your system, the main speakers sound the same but better. And if you turn the sub off you don't think where has the bass gone, you think why is the sound small and relatively flat. You can set it up so that it goes boom and everyone knows there's a sub in the room - which can be fun I'll grant you - but for long term musical satisfaction an integrated sound is the way forward, the approach that's going to reveal more of the music and the venue it's played in.

SA/3, made in USA by legendary Nelson Pass. Very rare and in VERY good condition. 2 x 50 watt in pure class A. Ersteigern Sie eine Legende! Die Stereoendstufe Threshold SA 3 aus einem Nichtraucherhaushalt ist in einem sehr guten optischen Zustand, technisch einwandfrei. Es sind leichte Gebrauchsspuren vorhanden , die allerdings erst bei genauem Hinsehen ins Auge fallen. Vergleichbare Geräte in diesem guten Zustand werden sehr selten angeboten. Betrieben habe ich das Gerät eher selten, da ich als Sammler noch andere hochwertige Geräte besitze. Die Endstufe ist ein pure Class A-Gerät d.h., sie wird bei Gebrauch sehr warm. Deshalb sind die überdimensionierten Kühlrippen keine Show, sondern zwingend für die Wärmeabfuhr notwendig. Aufgrund dieser Technik ist das Gerät klanglich ein absoluter Traum. Betrieben habe ich die Endstufe an einer Infiniti Gamma. Wer diesen Lautsprecher kennt der weiss, dass es kaum kritischere Klangwandler gibt. Die techn. Qualitäten, insbesondere die akustischen Möglichkeiten in Verbindung mit passenden Lautsprechern sind phänomenal. Sie steigern auf eine Stereoendstufe, die allein durch durch den massiven Materialeisatz, eine imposante Erscheinung ist. Das Gerät wird mit techn. Beschreibung bzw. Betriebsanleitung (engl.) und Netzkabel geliefert. Gerne würde ich das Gerät bei mir persönlich übergeben, Abholung ausdrücklich erwünscht! Sollte das Gerät geliefert werden, würde ich dieses mit Hermes abwickeln. Bitte erkundigen Sie sich bei Hermes über die Lieferkosten. Das Gesamtgewicht liegt bei ca. 30 kg. This amp features a 1000KVA toroidal power supply, backed by 116,000 uF ofstorage. The design of this optical bias amp is to have no global negative feedback. It has a bipolar transistor output, and a generous area of heat-sinks around the case. What you end up with is an 82-pound battleship, with about as much firepower. Since the S/500 was introduced in 1984, the audio community and media have given it nothing less than stellar reviews, placing it among the most topnotch "A" list equipment. This is deservedly so.I purchased my S/500 in used/mint condition in 1999 for a paltry $1,300 . I felt like I stole my way into the high-end. I have heard a number of new power amps costing upwards of 9 kilo-bucks that I didn't like better. That says a lot about the original design genius of a 13 year old amp! This old amp extracted every bit of detail off a source. It reproduced music in a neutral, grain-free, non-fatiguing manner. I used material like Linda Ronstats "For sentimental reasons" for vocals. The midrange was a liquid, transparent presentation, which unlike many SS designs didn't sound flat, sterile, brittle, grainy, opaque, or cold.On classical material like "Mars, Bringer of war" and "Hut on Fowl's legs" the bass proved to be the tightest, deepest, most unblinkingly powerful I could hope to extract from a sound system. The very deepest notes had incredible control and definition. During a net search for Threshold information, I found Jon Soderberg's website. He offered repair and upgrade to Threshold/Forte products. I thought, if nothing else, maybe I could get the chassis freshened up on the inside, - 13 years can be a long time for some internal components. What does $425 buy in the year 2000? As far as amp mods go, a functional bargain-basement tweak that really works well. I dropped my amp off on a Monday, and picked it up on Saturday. The modifications included upgrading the four 29,000uF/80v storage caps to 37,000uF/100v caps . The power reservoir was now kicked up to 148,000 uF . The bias was adjusted for modification to the front end circuit, and the aged power switch was replaced for good measure.Almost immediately, the effects of this modification were obvious. No need for extensive DBT here. The same source material was now more forward. By that, I do NOT mean "bright." I mean that the air around instruments increased, and the soundstage was markedly improved. It's like you went from row "E" to row "C." The conveyed sense of room dimension was now more defined, and fine details became more prominent. Michael Bromek's "Celtic Guitar", track 2 - "Second two O Carolan's pieces" simply bloomed. The strings expanded outward magnificently, and when he taps his hollow-bodied guitar, the sound of flesh on wood is very realistic. Horns on "The best of Maynard Ferguson" and "The best of Chuck Mangione" from the stock amp were fluid, but now it feels like you could step BEHIND the horns. You sense the heat from staccato horn hits. The bass test came via Telarc's "Space spectacular" the main theme to "Battlestar Galactica " , "Star Trek TMP " and "Superman the movie." The bass impact was there as before, but now with an edge. It's like the information was more finely separated and etched. The visceral slam was improved. Zaranthrustra REALLY spake…loudly.I've seen companies offering questionable amp upgrades that are also very expensive. They are nothing more than replacing all the guts of an amp for the price of a new one. By contrast, this is a cost-effective deal-and-a-half. I highly recommend this upgrade to any owner of a Threshold product. It merely makes the already excellent amp more of what it already is. It is like a product evolution. Nelson Pass has over-designed superb products for years. Threshold provides the tube community with a solid state alternative for detailed musicality without fatigue. For those of you looking for a means of increasing personal enjoyment of a Threshold amp, this upgrade will not disappoint!

GM 50 Amplificatore Integrato L’amplificatore integrato GM-50 è la più recente creazione GRAAF, destinata a completare la nostra produzione nei segmenti di vertice. Il GM-50 racchiude in un telaio singolo le caratteristiche e le prestazioni che in precedenza erano patrimonio esclusivo di preamplificatori e finali GRAAF. Qualità costruttiva, doti sonore e finiture del livello più elevato sono abbinate alla maggiore praticità d’impiego e ai costi più accessibili tipici degli amplificatori integrati. La sigla “GM” sul pannello frontale è infatti sinonimo di massima qualità del suono, e fino a oggi ha contraddistinto elettroniche di vertice quali il finale di potenza GRAAF GM-200 e il preamplificatore GM-13.5 B. Il GM-50 nasce quindi con l’intento di stabilire nuovi standard qualitativi nel settore degli amplificatori integrati di altissima classe.L’estetica del GRAAF GM-50 è come sempre curata fin nei minimi particolari, ed è basata sull’abbinamento di un massiccio pannello in alluminio da 15 mm di spessore con un cristallo trasparente che permette di osservare l’interno. Attraverso il cristallo indicatori a LED visualizzano la sorgente audio selezionata, conferendo al frontale un’attrattiva ancora maggiore. I comandi manuali sono comodi e affidati a manopole di ampio diametro: effettuano la regolazione del livello d’ascolto e la selezione degli ingressi. L’aspetto è solido e robusto, le sensazioni gratificanti che si ricavano dal loro impiego sono quelle tipiche che ci si attendono da un’elettronica GRAAF. L’accuratezza della realizzazione interna, e il dimensionamento generoso delle parti più critiche, sono suggeriti da una profondità del telaio vicina ai 50 centimetri. Il GM-50 dispone anche del telecomando, che effettua l’attivazione e lo spegnimento dell’amplificatore, e interviene sul livello d’ascolto, sulla selezione degli ingressi e sull’inserimento del circuito di Mute. All’amplificatore si possono collegare fino a sei sorgenti stereo di linea: due con uscite di tipo bilanciato e altre quattro sbilanciate. La dotazione comprende inoltre due uscite per registrazione e morsetti di qualità elevata per la connessione di una coppia di altoparlanti. Eleganza e raffinatezza, abbinate a versatilità e praticità d’impiego, sono un’anteprima delle esclusive caratteristiche costruttive del GM-50. Caratteristiche che sono state ponderate con la massima cura in fase di progetto, alfine di realizzare un’elettronica in grado di stabilire nuovi limiti qualitativi e sonori nel campo degli amplificatori integrati. Per questo motivo ci si avvale di alcune soluzioni proprie della serie OTL, ideata da Giovanni Mariani. Tra queste la configurazione totalmente bilanciata dall’ingresso all’uscita, ottenuta con il raddoppio di tutte le sezioni circuitali: una scelta di ricercatezza estrema, l’unica accettabile per gli standard qualitativi di GRAAF, che finora è stata impiegata solo su pochissime realizzazioni di costo molto maggiore. Il primo stadio, di guadagno e adattamento di impedenza, serve il controllo di livello garantendone il corretto funzionamento. Il segnale giunge quindi a un circuito formato da due stadi differenziali in cascata, il secondo dei quali costituisce il vero driver per la sezione di uscita. When you meet someone at a party or down the pub and get talking about hi-fi, here's a great way to find out just how well they know the subject: If they reckon Nakamichis are the best cassette decks ever made, they know something. If they say the Dragon is the best, they think they know a lot. If they say it's the CR-7E, they really do. You see, the Dragon - wonderful, mad creation that it is - isn't actually the best thing the legendary Nipponese cassette masters did. It's a big, bold, lavish technological tour-de-force, that's for sure - but it was never their last word in terms of sound quality. That accolade went to the ZX-9, and then the CR-7E came along with better record/ replay electronics and sounded even better still. The Dragon isn't a one-off product. In Japan, Nakamichi have traditionally been known as cassette deck specialists, but actually produce a whole range of audio electronics - from receivers to CD players - most of which is pretty unremarkable stuff. Commonly available in Japanese hi-fi shops at prices some 40% lower than over here, it's seen as good, solid, respectable fare - quite like Audiolab used to be known here. To differentiate their high end 'statement' products they market a range of gear under the Dragon brand, including CD players and amps. It's madly expensive, complex and packed with high tech. In 1988 though, Nakamichi decided that all their conspicuous technology used in the Dragon could be refocused towards getting the very best sound with absolutely no compromises. Out went mind-bogglingly complex auto-reverse mechanism with automatic electronic azimuth adjustment, and in came a beautifully engineered direct-drive, dual capstan unidirectional transport automated for convenience and given remote control too. less than its flagship bigger brother, but sounded even more stunning. Its feature list is Spartan by comparison - the usual logic controlled transport keys in the middle, with fader up, down and REC MUTE buttons beneath. Counter mode selectors and timer controls made a token gesture towards domestic acceptability, and then there was the manual tape sector (for types I, II and IV cassettes) with switchable EQ. For the first time on a Nakamichi though, these weren't strictly necessary as the CR-7E could also chose tape types automatically if desired. Adjustable playback azimuth - a grand name for what NAD modestly call PLAY TRIM - meant the '7's record/replay head could be motor-adjusted by up to two- thirds of a degree to play tapes recorded on lesser decks to their best potential. There was switchable Dolby NR (B and C, but as per Nak tradition, no HX or S). You also got an amazing set of meters with switchable PEAK HOLD - and the claim that they read up to +10dB was no idle boast! Although Nakamichi's rivals had offered auto tape calibration for many a long year, Nak debuted theirs with the CR-7E. It was simple to use - you just loaded a blank tape, pressed AUTO CALIBRATION, a light flashed for fifteen seconds and you were ready to record. Sound quality is startling - better than every other cassette deck in the world bar none; it even gives high quality semi-pro open reels (like Revox's B77) a sharp slap around the face. With a decent metal tape, you can casually record at +10dB, such are the Nak's stunning discrete heads, and even beer-budget ferrics sound better than anyone else's cassette deck running the most expensive metals. Pitch stability, dynamics, depth perspective, noise levels - everything - is superb. Replay of pre-recordeds is a revelation - if they're decent all-analogue copies they'll trounce even a modern high end CD player. In fact, the Nak's resolution far exceeds CDs - to fully hear what it's capable of you need live recordings or a high end vinyl source. Il DVD-A11 utilizza convertitori D/A indipendenti per la riproduzione delle immagini Progressive med Interlacciate. Questi convertitori garantiscono una frequenza di campionatura molto elevata, pari a 216 MHz, con una sovracampionatura 8x utilizzata per il funzionamento in modalità Progressiva ed una sovracampionatura 16x in modalità Interlacciata, ottenendo come risultato la conversione D/A più precisa attualmente disponibile. ■ Sezione Video Utilizzando un filtro con estese caratteristiche di sezionamento come filtro analogico passa basso, il DVD-A11 riesce a riprodurre le delicate sfumature dei segnali video, consentendo allo spettatore di apprezzare le immagini originali al massimo livello di realismo. ■ Alimentazioni indipendenti Sono state studiate alimentazioni indipendenti per lo stadio di elaborazione del segnale audio, lo stadio del segnale video ed altre sezioni, allo scopo di eliminare le interferenze reciproche. L’alimentazione di potenza che viene fornita ai vari circuiti contribuisce ad una elevata qualità delle immagini e del suono. ■ Noise Shaped Video (NSV) ■ Filtro Super Sub Alias ■ Circuito di Riduzione Rumore Rumore di fondo e sfarfallio, caratteristici problemi dei segnali video compressi in formato MPEG, vengono efficacemente eliminati per produrre un’immagine video più naturale. Inoltre, la riduzione del rumore 3D elimina i disturbi minori presenti nell’immagine video per riprodurre splendidamente solo le informazioni video richieste. ■ Modalità Pure Direct Il DVD-A11 include due modalità Pure Direct che migliorano ulteriormente la qualità del suono. Ad esempio, durante l’utilizzo dell’uscita audio analogica, il Pure Direct può disattivare le alimentazioni della sezione digitale, della sezione video ed il display frontale, che potrebbero influire sulla qualità sonora dei segnali audio analogici. ■ Elaborazione AL24 per tutti i canali Denon ha ulteriormente sviluppato la propria tecnologia brevettata AL24 Processing per la riproduzione delle forme d’onda analogiche, a supporto della frequenza di campionatura di 192 kHz del DVD-Audio. Questa nuova tecnologia, AL24 Processing Plus, sopprime efficacemente il rumore di quantizzazione associato alla conversione D/A dei segnali LPCM, per riprodurre i segnali di basso livello con un’eccezionale chiarezza, che mette in luce tutte le delicate sfumature musicali. ■ DENON Link Quando il DVD-A11 è collegato tramite un apposito cavo con terminali RJ-45, ad un amplificatore A/V dotato di ingresso Denon Link, il trasferimento bilanciato di segnali offre una tensione inferiore rispetto ai cavi coassiali o non bilanciati. Dato che DenonLink è molto meno sensibile al rumore irradiato, garantisce il massimo livello di trasferimento di segnale. L’interfaccia Denon Link è in grado di trasferire un’uscita digitale di alta qualità LPCM 24-bit / 192-kHz / a 2 canali (*1). ■ Costruzione multistrato Poiché i dati ad alta densità registrati su DVD devono essere letti con assoluta precisione, le vibrazioni provenienti da sorgenti esterne o interne, come l’alimentazione, influiscono negativamente sulla qualità del sonoro e delle immagini. Nel DVD-A11 sono state adottate diverse soluzioni per sopprimere queste vibrazioni indesiderate. Il fondo del telaio del DVD-A11 è caratterizzato da una solida struttura a 3 strati progettata per meliminare le vibrazioni. Robuste flange di rinforzo vengono utilizzate anche sul frontale e sul retro del telaio stesso. L’aggiunta di una copertura superiore a 2 strati e di materiale isolante, servono ad eliminare le vibrazioni esterne. E la base del trasformatore è realizzata di alluminio pressofuso che assorbe le vibrazioni esterne e quelle provenienti dal trasformatore stesso per garantire un funzionamento ottimale.
