The "roots" of Wyred 4 Sound EJ Sarmento
started as an assembler for Cullen Circuits in the mid 90's shortly after the
manufacturing side had begun. His early years with car electronics gave him a
good taste for what he was getting into. Crimping transformer after transformer
for the first several weeks quickly taught him that repetition, quality, and
productivity was the key to success. Working under the guidance of Barry Nelson
(production manager at the time) offered variations in projects and allowed
hands on training in every aspect of production. Barry found that he promptly
became a "jack of all trades", and always "floated" him around to help in
different departments as needed. Barry looked at him as a true team player. The
one that works through the night into the morning and even through holidays to
get "hot" projects out the door. Sub-contract customers also found that they
could rely on him to get the job done even when there didn't seem to be enough
time in the day. Through building thousands of products, EJ quickly
learned the "nuts and bolts" of each product. Working next to long time comrade
Kevin Stewart, the two built the majority of production for the longest time.
Over the years, notes were taken, skills were learned, lessons were given, and
new faces appeared. Barry Nelson had to relocate for family reasons, which left
EJ in the production management position. With production numbers
continually going up, the testing department couldn't seem to keep up with
production. Along with James Ross (head technician at the time), EJ opted to
help as much as he possibly could in the testing department. As time went on,
James decided to move on to a technician position with another local company.
This left EJ to also cover in the testing department. He swiftly picked up the
routines, and accomplished goals day after day. Enjoying every aspect of
daily tasks, EJ couldn't learn enough as fast as he'd like. He then attended
night classes to study electronics in college. Because of the hands on
experience, everything seemed to go very well. He accelerated very quickly and
learned a great deal in record time. In his spare hours, EJ grasped the ins and
outs of Solid Works (3-D design software), and Protel (circuit board design
program). He then decided to design a very small, low powered amplifier built
around ICEpower modules. This is where Wyred 4 Sound was born. The 200S was the
first model to be branded with the W4S name. Over the weekend, he built and
tested his amplifiers for the week to follow. After the web-site was put up and
the first 20 or so amps were in customers hands, orders started pouring in. As
the OEM production side of things started to slow down, Rick and EJ had more of
an opportunity to work together on modifications. They both learned that they
shared the same goals in audio, and found great friendship along the way. After
several production-based modifications were released, customers quickly found
that the quality and value they were getting was extraordinary. Business began
to grow exponentially. As the product line grew to stereo and mono
amplifiers, the demand was overwhelming. The stress was huge on EJ and something
needed to give soon. There was barely enough time in the day for his role in
Cullen Circuits, and even less for W4S in the evenings. He then decided that it
would be best to move on with his company, but couldn't because of the amount of
time invested, and dedication involved in both. Together EJ and Rick decided
that they could both make sacrifices to ensure the growth of both businesses.
Several assemblers were promoted to technicians and provided the level of
perfomance W4S was known for. Now production management and product design was
his primary role which proved to be very effective. With the help of the past at
Cullen Circuits, and close friends in the industry, EJ continues to develop the
chassis, circuit, software, and web design for W4S. Together, this team will
provide advanced high-end audio products for years to come at an affordable

The Wyred 4 Sound server is an all in one music solution. From streaming
high resolution tracks to playing Internet radio this versatile, compact unit
does not skip a beat. The operating system and music playback software are
tailored for playing music and it does so very effectively. The small size at
less than a half rack depth and width takes up minimal space! Standard on board
storage starting at 1TB will accommodate over 1000 CD’s. The built-in auto
rip CD drive goes to work automatically as soon as a disk is inserted, and
copies files into FLAC(Free Lossless Audio Codec) format. When the CD ripping
process is complete it will auto-eject. Adding music already stored on a
computer is as simple as drag and drop over a local network. Files that are on
the server can be edited using any computer on the local network. Selecting
tracks, browsing the music library, and starting up your favorite Pandora® radio

The transparent nature of a Wyred 4 Sound product is able to reproduce your

Feature Overview The mINT chassis was designed around the internal components.
Its physical size could not have been any smaller! In the brainstorming stage of
this project EJ Sarmento set out to create a unit that pushed the envelope in
terms of size, performance, features, and value. At times when the feature set
was discussed we couldn’t help but laugh about the versatility that this sleek
box would provide with a footprint slightly larger than a DVD case. After all,
our economy is not as strong as it was ten years ago and an affordable, small
integrated amp with a built in DAC and head phone amp just makes sense. There
are many reasons why this mini integrated amplifier is unique. To start with,
the volume control in the mINT is a true-resistive ladder which results in
linear control, excellent channel matching, and impressive sonic quality. It was
no simple task to attain these qualities using the one-turn analog pot on the
mINT, so it was necessary to step outside of the box. Rather than passing the
signal through the pot, it is only used as a position reference. A soft ramp
feature means that when powering the unit on/off or using the mute/un-mute it
increases/decreases the volume at a pleasant rate. The mINT has a 12V DC trigger
in and out as well as an external mains voltage switch. Two analog inputs (Auxiliary
1 and 2) are side by side on the rear panel. An alternate function of Aux 2 is
HT bypass (Home Theater bypass) and is activated via a push switch on the back.
When HT is selected, the trigger in becomes one activation point for the HT
mode. Aux Out (preamp output) will work very well to incorporate a powered
subwoofer. In addition to the pre-out the mINT has a Fixed out that will
typically be used to send a signal to a recording device or feed a signal to a
second system. An alternate function of the Fixed out is a Main In feature that
can be used with the preamp output to allow the insertion of a digital crossover
into the signal path. This feature can be selected by the “Fixed out/Main in”
button located on the rear of the unit next to the HT Bypass selector.Located
top and center of the rear panel, you will find three digital inputs powered by
an ESS DAC chip for an incredible experience when streaming your digital
recordings. The S/PDIF inputs will support 24 bit 192kHz resolution files and
the asynchronous USB interface will support 24 bit 96kHz resolution files. Each
digital input can be connected to a different source and selected independently
via the remote or input select buttons on the front.A Ľ” headphone jack is
machined into the left had side of the front panel. When a headphone plug is
inserted into the jack it will mute the other outputs (other than the Fixed
outputs) regardless of the input selected or volume level. The performance of
the built-in headphone amp is nothing short of impressive. Independent power
supplies for exceptionally low channel crosstalk, low noise and an abundance of
dynamic range make for true hi fidelity headphone experience. Did you think we

source of on-board amplification, after all it is an integrated amplifier!

If
you're looking for the ultimate in transparency, and an unbelievably accurate
pre-amp, then we have the product for you. Spot on imaging and an extremely wide
sound stage are just a few attributes of our STP preamp. We had so much fun with
the proto-type it's actually intrigued us to continue making changes to the
design than intended. More improvements were also made beyond the standard STP,
the STP-SE was born. In the Special Edition unit we are upgrading the internal
input/output wiring to Kimber Tcss (multi-gauge, multi-strand, continuous strand
pure copper). We are also upgrading 4 crucial power-supply capacitors to our W4S
Low ESR "Super Cap". These improvements offer improved 3-D imaging and
instrument placement. There are so many particulars that make the STP
superior to other preamps. The best possible preamp would be one that didn’t
exist! We have created the closest anyone has ever come to that while still
offering a fully functional preamp. For the cleanest sound, what goes in should
come out, nothing less, nothing more. For this we’ve made our preamp passive and
active at the same time. To keep the signal path clean as possible, the line
stage is automatically switched in when needed, and left out when not. This
offers the quietest operation for any level up to unity gain. Noise in the
passive mode is <6uV, and <18uV in the active mode which is incredibly good. And
yes, this product is fully balanced input to output When we say passive, we mean
as in no gain. We all know that all passive preamps have many issues regarding
input and output impedances. These issues are massive because of the lack of
drive current the preamp is able to produce. The result is a loose, floppy
bottom end, and a constricted, dry top end. To solve this, we inserted our
Ultra-transparent discrete buffer stages to address this issue, which proved to
give us remarkable results. Like any audio electronic product, everything
starts with a power supply. This is the first stage that gives the STP
unbelievably clean power. With a 25A Schottky bridge rectifier connected through
164,560+uF of capacitance in our proprietary TRR (Triple-Ripple-Reduction) power
supply circuit, the STP preamp has more capacitance than some amplifiers! By the
time power reserves supply the audio chain with power, there is no hint of noise
left to buzz through your speakers. Of course we left 2 stages of filtering up
to nothing but the best; the Nichicon Bi-polar MUSE audio grade capacitors do a
fantastic job! Our proprietary fully balanced dual FET unity gain buffers
supply the meat behind the curtains. While being sonically transparent, our
buffers keep the input and output impedance right where we want them and don’t
allow for deviations like so many other passive preamps. Hand selected, matched
and adjusted, each pair ensures minimal DC offset, and maximum linearity.
Every preamp has to have a volume control. This is also a HUGE part in why our
unit differs. The easy route (practically everyone else takes) consists of
putting audio in and out of a volume control chip. While being cost effective
and easy to design, the audio is left at the mercy the chip. The best possible
electrical connection that can be made and released on command is made by a
switch. The best sounding switch is one that has the least resistance and can
maintain at all frequencies, for this we chose to use relays. While much more
expensive, slower and noisier when switching, they are far more sonically
superior to any switcher chip on the market today. The second part of our
volume control is the resistors. That’s right, relays and resistors are the only
components interacting with the audio signal. Like all our other products, we
use Dale rn55d copper leaded precision resistors. Supplying exceedingly accurate
channel to channel level matching (+/- 0.05db) and isolation (>106db), our
discrete volume control is the most transparent and spaciously sounding
attenuator we’ve heard. A maximum attenuation of 128db will quiet the loudest of
sources, and as little as 0.5db steps allow for the finest control. With 2
sets of balanced inputs/outputs, 3 sets of unbalanced inputs and 2 sets
unbalanced outputs, connection possibilities are vast. Being fully balanced
input to output; the phase going in comes out. When an unbalanced input is
selected, an inversion circuit is connected to maintain balanced outputs and
optimum versatility. Absolute phase and balance control are easily selected
through the supplied remote for those out of phase recordings, and room
adjustments to be made on the fly. User interface is made easy with the
VFD display and optical rotary encoder. Allowing input naming and HT Bypass
input selection, the setup menu is easily accessed for customization. Several
display dimming steps including “off” are available through the remote for
stealth operation. Powering up the STP can be done several ways, by pushing in
on the volume knob (power button), by pressing power on the remote, or by the
remote DC trigger input when HT Bypass is selected in the setup menu. When an
input is selected to be used as the HT input, the DC trigger can be activated by
a surround processor to “power up” the unit, and automatically set the volume to
unity gain. This allows for all volume controls to be made through the surround
processor. When the processor is shut down, so is the STP and connected gear
through the DC trigger output. When 2ch listening is desired, then manual
operation can be executed from the front of the unit, or through the remote.
